Understand the movement mechanism
A clocked pattern repeats according to a timing relationship. An envelope follower reacts to the level of the source. A manually automated cutoff follows edits written in the DAW. The same loop can make those approaches sound related, but their behavior can diverge as soon as the performance changes.
Try a phrase with both loud and quiet notes, then one with longer gaps. Listen to whether the motion continues regularly or changes with the input. That tells you more about the mechanism than an animated curve by itself. Define the behavior you need before judging which interface makes it easiest.
