How does AI stem separation work?
Modern stem separation uses neural networks (Mel-Roformer, Demucs, Spleeter) trained to recognize vocals, drums, bass, and other instruments by their spectral signatures. The model predicts a mask for each stem and applies it to the original mix. We use Mel-Roformer — the same architecture top studios deploy on cloud GPUs.
What stems do I get?
Our AI Stem Splitter returns 5 separate WAV files: Vocals, Drums, Bass, Piano, and Other (everything else). The Free Stem Separator returns 4 stems (Vocals, Drums, Bass, Other). The Vocal Remover returns just the instrumental + acapella split — fastest and most accurate when you only need one or the other.
Is the audio uploaded to a server?
AI stem separation runs on cloud GPUs (it's too compute-heavy for the browser). Files are encrypted in transit and deleted from the server immediately after separation completes. We do not retain your audio.
Can I use the stems commercially?
The stems themselves are yours — but if you uploaded a copyrighted song, the extracted stems still carry the original song's copyright. To release a remix or sample commercially, clear the rights with the original artist or publisher. Upload your own recordings to skip the licensing question entirely.
