How to Install Vocal Presets on Cubase

Cubase is one of the most powerful DAWs in the industry, and loading vocal presets is straightforward. Follow the steps below to get your Rys Up Audio vocal presets loaded and ready to record in minutes.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Download and unzip your vocal preset pack from your Rys Up Audio account.
  2. Create a new Cubase project (or open an existing one).
  3. Drag and drop the preset file onto a new audio track — Cubase will automatically load all the plugins and settings.
  4. Open up Quick Controls to adjust the preset parameters to match your voice.

Alternative Method: Manual Loading

If drag and drop doesn't work for your preset format, you can load it manually:

  1. Create a new Audio Track in Cubase.
  2. Open the Channel Settings window by clicking the "e" button on the track.
  3. In the Inserts section, load each plugin from the preset chain manually.
  4. Import the individual plugin preset files through each plugin's preset browser.

Recommended Preset File Locations

  • Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Cubase/Track Presets/
  • Windows: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Cubase\Track Presets\

Placing presets in these folders makes them accessible through Cubase's built-in Track Preset browser (right-click on a track header).

Adding Pitch Correction

For the best results, add a pitch correction plugin as the first insert on the track. Cubase includes VariAudio (in Cubase Pro) which can be used for pitch correction directly in the audio editor. Alternatively, you can use third-party options like Auto-Tune or the free MAutoPitch.

Set the pitch correction to the key of your song. If you don't know the key, use this tool to find it.

Adjusting the Preset to Your Voice

  • Input gain: Aim for an input level around -18dB to -12dB before the preset chain.
  • EQ: Use the Quick Controls or open the EQ plugin to make subtle adjustments for your voice.
  • Compression: If you hear too much or too little compression, adjust the compressor threshold.
  • De-esser: If you hear sibilance (harsh "s" sounds), increase the de-esser sensitivity.
  • Effects: Adjust reverb and delay send levels to taste — more for atmospheric tracks, less for upfront vocals.

Troubleshooting

  • Plugins not loading: Make sure all required plugins are installed. If a plugin is missing, Cubase will skip it — reinstall the missing plugin and reload the preset.
  • No sound: Verify your audio interface is selected in Studio Setup > Audio System, and that the track input is set to your microphone.
  • Preset sounds different: Every voice is unique. The preset is a starting point — use Quick Controls to fine-tune EQ, compression, and effects to match your specific voice and recording environment.
