REAPER Vocoder Setup: Stop Routing It Wrong

The short answer: a REAPER vocoder needs two signals and a routing plan. With stock ReaVocode, send the vocal to channels 1 and 2 of a dedicated vocoder track and the synth carrier to channels 3 and 4. With RysUpVocoder in MIDI mode, keep the vocal on the main input and send MIDI notes to the plugin instead of building a separate synth carrier track.

Why the REAPER vocoder goes silent

A vocoder is not one audio effect with one input. It needs a detector signal and a carrier signal. The detector is usually the vocal. The carrier is usually a synth or an internal oscillator controlled by MIDI.

Silence usually means one of those two signals never reached the plugin. A second common mistake is hearing the raw synth because its master send is still active. A third is sending both sources to the same channel pair, which leaves the stock vocoder without a separate carrier.

Do not change twenty plugin controls before checking the meters and route. Confirm vocal, carrier, and MIDI one at a time.

Understand the three track stock route

Vocal track
Detector audio goes to channels 1 and 2.
Synth track
Carrier audio goes to channels 3 and 4.
Vocoder track
ReaVocode combines both sources.

The official Cockos effects guide uses this exact layout. It asks for four channels on both source tracks, disables their master and parent sends, then creates a new track with ReaVocode.

The source tracks become feeders. The dedicated vocoder track becomes the audible result. That separation makes the route easy to debug.

Set up ReaVocode step by step

  1. Create a vocal track and place the recorded voice on it.
  2. Create a synth track, insert a virtual instrument, and record or draw the notes you want the vocoder to follow.
  3. Open the routing window for both source tracks and set each track to four channels.
  4. Disable the master and parent send on both source tracks so the raw vocal and synth do not bypass the vocoder.
  5. Create a third track named Vocoder and insert ReaVocode.
  6. Send the vocal track to channels 1 and 2 of the Vocoder track.
  7. Send the synth track to channels 3 and 4 of the Vocoder track.
  8. Play the session and balance the Wet, Dry, and Mod dry controls.

If the routing matrix feels confusing, name every send. The detector should say Vocal to Vocoder 1 and 2. The carrier should say Synth to Vocoder 3 and 4. Clear labels beat memory.

Choose a carrier that keeps the words clear

A carrier with stable harmonics gives the detector more material to shape. Start with a plain saw or bright sustained synth. Avoid a soft pad with a slow attack during setup because the vocoder cannot form clear syllables before the carrier arrives.

Hold simple notes or chords under the vocal. Match the rhythm later. First prove that every consonant and vowel can drive the effect.

After the route works, change the carrier. A narrower or darker synth can sound more musical, but it may reduce intelligibility. Every creative move should happen after the basic sentence is understandable.

Set the ReaVocode controls in the right order

Raise Wet first and lower Dry and Mod dry. You want to hear the processed detector without a raw source hiding the result. Then adjust Bands. More bands can preserve more spectral detail, while fewer bands can sound broader and more synthetic.

Use the vertical faders to shape the balance across the spectrum. Turn Stereo on only after the center sounds right. The Invert signal inputs switch detector and carrier roles, so leave it off during the first pass.

If a control move does nothing, go back to the route. A dead carrier cannot be repaired by raising the wet level.

Use RysUpVocoder for the shorter MIDI route

RysUpVocoder can remove the separate synth audio track from the normal MIDI workflow. Put it on the vocal track, keep the vocal on channels 1 and 2, select MIDI mode, and send MIDI notes into the plugin.

  1. Insert RysUpVocoder on the vocal track.
  2. Set Source to MIDI.
  3. Create a separate MIDI track or item for the notes and chords.
  4. Open routing on the MIDI track and create a send to the vocal track.
  5. Set Audio to none on that send and pass MIDI on all channels.
  6. Play the vocal and MIDI together.
  7. Confirm the plugin shows vocal input and held MIDI notes.

The current plugin accepts MIDI, uses the main audio input for the vocal in the normal route, and exposes two independent voice layers. Each layer has character, pitch, formant, level, and power controls. Key and scale mapping can constrain the notes before the vocoder engine receives them.

Use Sidechain mode only for the four channel job

Sidechain mode is for a routed audio source. In REAPER, enable four channels on the plugin track. Keep the main audio on channels 1 and 2 and route the detector vocal to channels 3 and 4 when the plugin is meant to read that auxiliary input.

The shipping processor exposes a stereo main input and an optional stereo sidechain input. In Sidechain mode it reads the enabled auxiliary as the vocal input. If the sidechain bus is not enabled, it falls back to the main input.

Use MIDI mode for the quickest playable vocal part. Use Sidechain mode when external audio is intentionally part of the carrier or detector plan. Do not combine both routes until each one works alone.

Fix the five common no sound problems

Symptom Likely cause Fix

Also check input monitoring when playing live MIDI. A perfect route still stays silent if the host never passes the notes.

Make the vocoder understandable in the mix

Start with one voice layer and one sustained note. Raise the processed blend until the words are clear. Add the second layer only when you can name its job.

Use one layer for the center and the second for pitch or formant contrast. Keep the width controlled. A huge stereo patch can sound impressive in solo and disappear in mono.

Cut low end from the processed result when it fights the bass. Keep enough upper mids for consonants. If the words still vanish, change the carrier or note pattern before boosting everything.

Run a clean A and B test

  1. Use the same vocal phrase for both routes.
  2. Use a simple sustained chord for the stock carrier and the Rys Up MIDI carrier.
  3. Match the output level before judging the result.
  4. Check how fast you can recall the route after closing and reopening the session.
  5. Listen in mono and on a small speaker.
  6. Count the steps needed to change the notes or tone.

Choose stock ReaVocode when the separate detector and carrier architecture is the point. Choose RysUpVocoder when a focused two layer MIDI instrument, direct pitch and formant control, and faster recall matter more.
