How to Use a Vocoder in Logic Pro Without Getting Silence

How to use a vocoder in Logic Pro: load EVOC 20 PS on a software instrument track, choose your vocal track from the Side Chain menu, then play or record MIDI notes on the EVOC track. The vocal supplies the words. The notes and internal synth supply the pitch and harmonic body.

The short answer: if you hear silence, the problem is usually one missing part of that three signal setup. You need a vocal with signal, a selected sidechain, and MIDI notes reaching EVOC 20 PS at the same time.

The fastest Logic Pro vocoder setup

1. Put the clean vocal recording on an audio track.
2. Create a new software instrument track.
3. Load EVOC 20 PS in the instrument slot.
4. Choose the vocal track from the Side Chain menu in the plugin header.
5. Record or draw MIDI notes on the EVOC track.
6. Press play while both the vocal and MIDI regions overlap.
7. Blend the dry vocal underneath when the words need more definition.

That is the complete signal path. Do not start turning every EVOC control until those seven steps make sound. A complicated preset cannot fix a missing source or an empty MIDI region.

Create the two tracks before loading anything

Start with a clean vocal on an audio track. Remove obvious noise, edit the timing, and keep the signal strong enough to analyze without clipping. Hard consonants and clear vowels make the vocoder easier to understand.

Then create a software instrument track for EVOC 20 PS. This track holds the vocoder and the MIDI performance. Think of the vocal track as the mouth and the instrument track as the musical body.

Load EVOC 20 PS in the instrument slot

Open the instrument slot on the software instrument channel strip and choose EVOC 20 PS. Apple describes it as a real time combination of a vocoder and a polyphonic synthesizer. That is why it belongs in the instrument slot instead of a normal audio effect slot for this stock workflow.

Keep the default patch for the first sound check. A preset can change the carrier, filter bands, unvoiced detection, and output behavior all at once. Prove the routing first, then choose a sound.

Choose the vocal in the Side Chain menu

At the top of the EVOC 20 PS plugin window, open the Side Chain menu and select the vocal audio track. Logic sends that track into the analysis section of the vocoder.

The source vocal can remain audible, muted, or blended later. During setup, leave it audible long enough to confirm that the phrase is actually playing. Once EVOC responds, decide whether the finished part needs the dry lead, the processed layer, or both.

If the vocal track does not appear in the menu, confirm that the track exists in the same project and that Logic has finished loading the session. Rename the track something obvious such as VOCAL SOURCE before opening the menu again.

Play MIDI notes that match the song

Record enable the EVOC track and play a single note. If the vocal and note overlap, the words should take on the pitch and tone of the internal synth. Once that works, try a chord.

Use one note for a narrow robot voice, two or three notes for a harmony, and wider chords only when the arrangement has space. More notes create more harmonic density. They do not automatically create more clarity.

• Start with notes from the song key.
• Match MIDI rhythm to the important words.
• Leave gaps after phrases so the dry lead can answer.
• Shorten notes when the vocoder smears into the next lyric.

Make the words clear before making them huge

Vocoder intelligibility comes from the source performance, the analysis range, the carrier brightness, and the balance between voiced vowels and noisy consonants. If the lyric disappears, do not reach for output gain first.

Use a clean vocal with clear diction. Raise the analysis sensitivity only as far as needed. Choose a carrier with enough upper harmonics to reveal consonants. Keep the stereo image controlled until the center reads. Then blend the dry vocal quietly underneath if the hook still needs help.

EVOC 20 PS exposes analysis attack and release, filter bands, formant controls, unvoiced detection, the internal synth, modulation, and stereo output. Change one section at a time. Otherwise you will not know which move restored the words.

Fix a Logic Pro vocoder that makes no sound

If a third party Audio Unit does not appear, open Logic's Plugin Manager, confirm that the component is enabled, and rescan it. Apple documents Audio Units in the proper Audio Units submenu for effects and instruments.

Print three versions before choosing a sound

Loop one phrase with a hard consonant, a held vowel, and one pitch change. Print three versions at the same perceived level.

1. EVOC 20 PS with one MIDI note.
2. EVOC 20 PS with the finished chord movement.
3. RysUpVocoder in Voice mode or your chosen third party workflow.

Judge the words first, pitch second, and size third. Listen inside the instrumental, not only in solo. A brighter or louder solo bounce can feel impressive while becoming less readable in the record.

Choose the stock vocoder or the focused workflow

Do not buy a plugin because the stock tool looks old. Buy it only when the new workflow removes enough friction to help you finish more parts.

Build the rest of the vocal chain

Once the vocoder part is clear, place it inside the wider vocal chain order. Tune and clean the source before the vocoder when bad pitch or noise confuses the analysis. Use EQ, compression, delay, and reverb after the vocoder when the synthetic layer needs to sit behind the lead.
