Choose the workflow before the software
If you are already mixing a singer, leaving the project for every cleanup pass adds friction. If you only have an interview file, a plugin still needs a compatible host. If the problem is a single chair squeak, global denoising may affect far more audio than necessary.
Write down your deliverable first: a cleaned speech file, an editable vocal session, or a repaired archive. That one sentence removes a lot of irrelevant shopping. A processor that sounds promising but cannot return the format or editability you need is not a practical fit.
Identify what you are trying to remove
Listen to a pause, a quiet word, a loud word, and a sustained vowel. A steady fan under every phrase is different from a click at one edit. A roomy reflection after a word is different from broadband hiss. Distortion already recorded into the waveform is another problem again.
Use that diagnosis to define success. For a vocal, success might mean the room bed no longer distracts in the mix while breath, diction, and note texture remain believable. Total silence is not automatically a better result.
A gate reduces the level when its detector falls below a threshold. It does not automatically separate noise from a word while both happen together. A noise remover can act during the performance, but aggressive reduction can also damage the material you wanted to keep.
Browser speech enhancement has a specific job
Adobe Enhance Speech represents the upload and download route. Adobe documents audio upload, processing, and downloadable output, with supported formats and limits tied to the service. Review the current limits before building a repeated production workflow around it.
That route is different from keeping a vocal processor on a DAW track. After downloading, you must bring the result back into the project, line it up, and keep the original available. A later edit may mean another pass and another file to manage.
Do not assume a speech enhancement service preserves singing style, breaths, or musical background exactly as you intend. Audition your own material. For recordings you are not authorized to upload, keep the cleanup local. This is a workflow requirement, not a claim that every online service has the same privacy terms.
Desktop editors separate cleanup from mixing
Audacity provides a free desktop route for noise reduction. Its documented process uses a noise only selection to create a profile, then applies reduction to the chosen audio. The manual identifies steady noise as the intended problem and warns about damage from excessive reduction.

Compare what returns to your project
Compare the full revision loop, not just the processing button. Can you return to the original? Can you hear the repair against the beat? Does another person need the plugin to reproduce the session? If you hand off a rendered file, label it clearly and retain the source.

Run a short audition before committing
Duplicate the source or save a new project version. Choose a short passage containing silence, soft diction, a loud phrase, and a sustained note. Use the same passage for every candidate so the comparison is meaningful.
Begin with conservative reduction. Match the perceived playback level when comparing the original and result. Louder audio can seem clearer even when the repair is worse. Listen in solo for artifacts, then in the full arrangement for actual distraction.

Reject watery words and damaged tails
Stop increasing reduction when the vocal becomes hollow, watery, unstable, or unnaturally gated. A small remaining room bed may be less distracting than damaged diction. Recheck quiet word endings because they can disappear before loud vowels sound obviously wrong.
If the noise changes across the recording, one setting may not work everywhere. Treat passages separately when needed. If a chair squeak lands only between phrases, a local edit with fades may be cleaner than applying stronger global processing.
Severe clipping, missing syllables, and a voice buried beneath loud music can exceed the useful repair range. Keep the possibility of a new take on the table. Software should help you finish the recording, not convince you that an unusable result is finished.
Check format and handoff requirements
