Audacity Noise Gate for Vocals: Stop Cutting Room Noise by Hand

An Audacity noise gate is for the quiet spaces between words. It turns down audio below a threshold, which can make pauses cleaner. It does not remove a fan that is still audible under the vocal, and it does not repair a clipped recording. Use it for the right problem and the vocal stays natural. Use it as a universal denoiser and the gaps get obvious fast.

Noise gate or noise reduction?

Start by listening to a pause and then to a word. If the unwanted sound only appears between phrases, a gate can attenuate the pause. If the noise continues underneath the word, a gate cannot separate it from the voice because both are above the gate threshold at the same time.

Find the noise floor before touching the gate

Keep a short section that contains room sound but no voice. In Audacity, open Effect, Noise Removal and Repair, then Noise Gate. Use its noise analysis function on the isolated section when available. The current Audacity manual says the analysis uses the first half second of the selection to suggest a starting threshold.

That number is a starting point, not a magic setting. Play the quietest wanted consonants and word endings. The threshold must sit above the pause noise while leaving those quiet parts intact. If a breath vanishes, lower the threshold or reduce the amount of attenuation.

Use a gentle starting setup

For a spoken or sung vocal, begin with a modest level reduction rather than absolute silence. The current manual documents gate threshold, level reduction, attack, hold and decay controls. Its published ranges include threshold from minus 96 to minus 6 dB, attack from 1 to 1000 ms, hold from 0 to 2000 ms and decay from 10 to 4000 ms.

Those ranges are not a reason to start at an extreme. Try a threshold a little above the measured pause, level reduction around minus 12 to minus 24 dB, attack around 10 ms, hold around 50 ms and decay around 100 ms. Then adjust by ear. These are starting points for a short vocal test, not a promise that every recording needs the same values.

Increase hold when the gate chatters between syllables. Increase decay when the word ending snaps off. If the beginning of a consonant disappears, lower the threshold or use a faster attack. Always preview a phrase with a plosive, a soft consonant and a sustained vowel.

Keep the gate from chopping word endings

Solo listening can make a gate seem impressive because the room goes silent. Put the vocal back in the track before deciding. Short words and quiet endings often reveal the damage first. If the lyric becomes smaller or the breath pattern feels unnatural, back off the reduction.

Use clip gain or manual edits for one bad pause instead of forcing one threshold to solve the entire take. A gate should lower the unwanted gap, not decide where every phrase ends. Keep the original clip or an editable project so you can undo the choice later.

Know when Audacity noise reduction is the better move

Audacity's noise reduction workflow learns a profile from a noise only selection and applies that profile to the chosen audio. The official manual warns that aggressive settings can damage wanted signal and that changing, loud or overlapping noise may remain difficult. That makes it a different tool from a gate.

A useful order is to make the smallest cleanup pass that solves the constant noise, then use a lighter gate for the remaining pauses. Check the result at normal listening level and in the full arrangement. A clean solo track that loses consonants is not a clean vocal.

Run a five minute decision test

Duplicate a short phrase. Keep one dry reference. On the copy, analyze the pause, set a gentle threshold, preview the consonant and ending, then listen in the mix. Compare the gate bypassed, lightly reduced and heavily reduced. If the heavy version sounds cleaner only because the vocal got smaller, keep the light version.

Then test one phrase with continuous noise. If the gate leaves that noise under the word, move to a profile based cleanup or RysUpNoise Pro. Save the choice with the project so you can revisit it when the arrangement changes.
