How to test phaser plugins without fooling yourself
- Use three sources. Test one vocal ad lib, one sustained synth, and one guitar or keys loop. A phaser that shines on pads can eat the clarity of a vocal.
- Match the wet level. Louder movement feels more exciting. Keep every option at the same perceived volume before judging it.
- Match the sweep speed. Compare plugins at the same musical rate first. A faster sweep can sound more dramatic while hiding a weaker fit.
- Start with low feedback. Raise feedback only after the movement fits the arrangement. Resonant peaks can get harsh fast.
- Check the low end. Sweep a bass or full mix and listen for disappearing weight. Use a low cut or a parallel send when the bottom loses focus.
